Sports Chiropractic for performance enhancement and injury prevention
When playing sports, daily training and competition place significant strain on the body. Repetitive motions and asymmetrical movements, in particular, can subject joints and muscles to excessive stress, leading to injury. Chiropractic care, which focuses on adjusting the spine which contains nervous system controlling joints, muscles, and internal organs is gaining attention for addressing these physical conditions. Many athletes in the Olympics and professional sports teams (track and field, swimming, soccer, baseball, American football, basketball, rugby, golf, weightlifting, etc.) utilize chiropractic care. During the 2025 MLB World Series, the closely contested matchup between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays drew attention, with both teams having team chiropractors to provide chiropractic care for their players.
Chiropractic is a specialized healthcare focuses on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of musculoskeletal disorders, particularly concerning the spine. By optimizing the function of the spine and joints, it enhances nervous system function, improves overall bodily balance, and boosts the body’s natural healing abilities. With professional licensing systems and university education established in over 100 countries worldwide, chiropractic is trusted as a field within sports care conditioning. Tokyo Chiropractic also sees baseball players, rugby players, basketball players, racing drivers, and others visiting for physical care. This article introduces the reasons athletes utilize chiropractic care, its effects, safety, and examples of treatments.
Olympic and Paralympic Games

A Key Member of the Multidisciplinary Sports Medicine Team
Elite athletes competing in the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games are exposed to extraordinary physical and psychological demands. To support performance, recovery, and athlete safety, modern elite sport relies on a multidisciplinary medical team—and chiropractic care has become an established component of this system.
Chiropractors in the USOPC Medical Model
Within the USOPC (United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee), chiropractors are appointed as part of the official Olympic and Paralympic medical staff, working collaboratively alongside: medical doctors (sports medicine physicians and orthopedists), athletic trainers, chiropractors, massage therapists, physical therapists, and psychological service practitioners. This collaborative structure reflects a shared goal: optimizing athlete health while minimizing injury.
Clinical Role of Chiropractic Care in Elite Sport
In Olympic and Paralympic environments, chiropractic care is primarily focused on:
- Musculoskeletal assessment (spine and extremities)
- Manual therapy, including spinal manipulation and mobilization
- Joint function optimization to support movement efficiency
- Pain modulation and neuromuscular coordination
- Injury prevention and recovery support, rather than symptom-only treatment
Care plans are integrated with exercise therapy, rehabilitation protocols, and load-management strategies designed by the wider medical team. For Paralympic athletes, chiropractic care is adapted to each athlete’s impairment, sport classification, and assistive equipment, with particular attention to overuse injuries, postural stress, and long-term musculoskeletal health.
Common Clinical Cases
- Lower back pain from repetitive motion Improve pelvic/lumbar function, enhance nerve function
- Knee discomfort during running Evaluate hip/ankle joints, provide movement guidance
- Tension around shoulders/scapular region Improve thoracic/shoulder joint mobility, posture adjustment
- Fatigue or decreased concentration Autonomic nervous system balance adjustment, body reset
Safety and Key Considerations When Receiving Care
Chiropractic care is considered highly safe when administered by appropriately trained professionals. For athletes specifically, we recommend seeking care from internationally certified chiropractors (members of the Japan Chiropractors Association or certified by the Japan Chiropractic Registration Organization) who have completed postgraduate education or seminars specializing in sports medicine and collaborate with medical institutions.
At Tokyo Chiropractic, internationally certified chiropractors (members of the Japan Chiropractors Association or certified by the Japan Chiropractic Regiser) provide care and collaborate with medical facilities as needed. Regardless of competitive level, chiropractic plays a significant role in supporting athletes to maximize bodily function, prevent injuries, and enjoy sports long-term. Chiropractic care assists performance enhancement, injury prevention and recovery promotion.
